Scott Dann to present Colours

April 21, 2006

Scott DannThe annual university Sports Awards will be held at the Holiday Inn next Wednesday, 26th April 2006. These awards are in recognition of outstanding sporting achievements made by students over the past academic year and will be presented by Scott Dann – British and Commonwealth Middleweight Champion and BBC South West Sports Personality of the Year.

The sports awards or ‘Colours’, as they are know within the university, are given to students who have shown individual excellence or commitment to sport at the university. They are an important recognition of the contribution that students make through outstanding individual achievement, commitment and dedication to university sport and are nominated by their peers. Many will be recognised for their volunteering work and giving time to help out with coaching local schools.

The University of Plymouth Students’ Union (UPSU) which administers the sports clubs and arranges fixtures hold the awards ceremony every year but it is the first time it has raised the profile of this event by inviting Scott Dann to present the awards.  The evening has been sponsored by C103, Taxifast and Stitches.

Notable achievements that the university has celebrated over the academic year include; Surfing – British University Sports Association (BUSA) champions; Table Tennis – BUSA silver and bronze individual medal winners; Snowboarding – Chris Allodi, fourth year Science undergraduate came fourth in British University Snowboarding Championships. The university came first in the team event. Octopush – National Champions; Golf – Women – BUSA finalists; Rowing – Head of River Champions, Trampolining – BUSA  individual gold medal; Tae Kwondo – third in team event – British Students Tae Kwondo Federation.

Ben ‘Wiggy’ Wiggins, UPSU Sports and Activities Officer, said: “UPSU is committed to developing and ensuring students at the university have the best possible chance of success. This award ceremony goes some way to recognising what has been achieved and holding it at the Holiday Inn – as well as having Scott Dann to present the awards – shows how importantly we view sports and societies. We want to make them a priority at the university and fully integrate within the community, through local leagues, coaching in schools and clubs. This is an area that many people in Plymouth probably know very little about but each week we have many students volunteer their time to teach and coach in the community. They deserve to be recognised at these types of events.”

DO YOU WANT TO HELP FRESHERS DURING FRESHERS FORTNIGHT?DO YOU WANT TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS?ARE YOU GOOD AT IN A TEAM?

April 20, 2006

Freshers AngelsWe are looking for fun enthusiastic students who are available during the first few weeks of September 2006 to help new students settle into student life.

Freshers’ is a fun, vital time at the start of university life.  There are loads of things to do during the day and night and it’s the perfect opportunity to meet lots of new people.  It can also be a very overwhelming time for people leaving home for the first time.  UPSU is hoping to help new students during this stressful time, with the Freshers’ Angels scheme; now in its second year.

Freshers’ Angels is a scheme run by student volunteers whose aim is to make the first few weeks of term as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible for new students.  To achieve this Angels will organise a timetable of events to run during September and October; including bowling/swimming/cinema/city tours and many more.  In your role tasks will include; informing students of services/events available and attending the organised events.  For more information on how to get involved email Karen: volunteer@su.plymouth.ac.uk
